How Claude API billing works

  • MTok means one million tokens: $5 / MTok is $5 for every million tokens.
  • The Batch API processes requests asynchronously at a 50% discount on input and output tokens.
  • Cache hits cost 0.1x the base input price on most models, 0.05x on Claude Opus 5.5 and Claude Sonnet 5.5, and 0.025x on Claude Fable 5.1.
  • Claude 4.7 and later models use a newer tokenizer that produces about 30% more tokens for the same text.
  • Limited-availability and retired models are omitted. Cloud platforms, data residency, and fast mode are priced separately on the official page.

How much does the Claude API cost per million tokens?
On the official list, current models range from $0.10 input and $0.50 output per million tokens for Claude Haiku 5.5 (prompts up to 100K tokens) to $10 input and $50 output for Claude Fable 5.1 and Claude Fable 5.
Is the Claude Batch API cheaper?
Yes. The Batch API processes requests asynchronously at a 50% discount on input and output tokens. For example, Claude Sonnet 5.5 costs $1 input and $5 output per million tokens in Batch, instead of $2 and $10.
What happens when a Claude API spend limit is reached?
A spend limit you set returns HTTP 400 until it resets or you raise it. Reaching your usage tier's monthly spend cap returns HTTP 429 with enforced_spend_limit_reached until 00:00 UTC on the first day of the next month or until you move to a higher tier.
