Telnyx Balance Monitoring: API Key Setup & Billing Guide

Check your Telnyx account balance in USD. Follow API v2 key setup, distinguish credit limits and pending funds, and reconcile Voice AI and inference billing.

Awaiting live-account verification

Guide updated

Implemented from official documentation. Real-account key creation, permissions, workspace scope, amounts and these instructions still require user verification; automated checks do not establish live billing accuracy.

Monitoring currency
USD · US dollars
What is monitored
Account balance · USD
Fixed GET https://api.telnyx.com/v2/balance. data.balance is already USD: balance=300.00 means $300, not $3. scope=account includes the Telnyx services billed to the authenticated account; it is not a separate Voice AI, inference, project or API-key wallet.

Check Telnyx manually without sharing a key

  1. Sign in to Mission Control and choose the correct organization/workspace in the top selector.
  2. Open profile/settings → Manage billing and read USD Balance, not Available credit, a spend limit or a BYOK provider bill.
  3. Record the time and pending-payment state; compare the same account to Quota Monitor without adding credit limits or summing duplicate connections.

Connect Telnyx to Quota Monitor

  1. Choose the account that pays for your AI usage

Open Mission Control below and sign in yourself. Use the organization selector in the top navigation to choose the workspace whose Telnyx services you want to monitor; confirm the workspace banner.

Open your profile/settings and Manage billing. Record the account context, USD Balance and observation time privately. If you are viewing another currency, a gateway spend cap or another provider's BYOK bill, stop: this connector does not represent that amount.

  2. Check access without expanding permissions

You need permission to manage an API v2 key and read this account's balance. Telnyx documents account-management groups, but not a balance-only permission scope on these API keys; do not assume a portal read-only role makes the key read-only.

Use an existing authorized account or ask your owner to review access. Do not enable an admin template, share an owner's production key or alter organizational membership for this tutorial. If safe delegated access is unavailable, use the manual check below.

  3. Create a separate API v2 key

Open API Keys below, or use Account Settings → API Keys from the account icon. Confirm the intended workspace again and select Create API Key, not API V1 Tokens.

Add a descriptive label such as Quota Monitor balance. Under Expiration choose Set Expiration Date if your rotation process supports it, then create the key. No payment, phone number, model call or API-permission JSON is required by this integration.

  4. Keep the one-time value private

Copy the newly displayed value to your password manager before leaving the dialog. Keep the full value, without quotes or a Bearer prefix. A label, masked suffix or API v1 token is not a replacement.

If you lose it, create another dedicated key and disable only the unused monitoring key. Do not revoke a key used by other applications. Never put the value in chat, screenshots, URLs or browser developer tools.

  5. Add Telnyx to your Quota Monitor project

Open the intended project in Quota Monitor, add a provider connection and choose Telnyx. Enter a recognizable connection name, paste the key into the masked credential field and save. MCP clients use the secure setup link instead of sending the key to the agent.

Check that the selected provider is Telnyx and the currency is USD. No upstream account ID, billing group, project ID, key ID or custom URL is needed. Reuse an existing connection for the same funds where appropriate.

  6. Run the first balance query

Wait for the initial sync or choose Sync balance / Query latest balance on the card. Verify that the last-success time advances and a USD Account balance appears; do not treat a saved connection alone as success.

The server only reads GET https://api.telnyx.com/v2/balance with Bearer authentication. It never sends a model request, transfers funds or purchases anything. An error must remain an error, not a freshly reported zero.

  7. Reconcile balance, credit and pending separately

Return to the same Mission Control workspace and Manage billing. Compare USD Balance with telnyxBalance.balance, not Available credit. In the official example balance=300.00, credit_limit=100.00, available_credit=400.00 and pending=10.00, the main amount remains $300.

Review the three details separately. Do not show $410 or subtract usage again. Check timestamps and pending payments before retrying. If API and portal still disagree, keep the connection marked unverified and ask Telnyx support without sending secrets.

  8. Use the official portal and rotate safely

Use Open provider on the card to return to Mission Control, recheck the workspace and open Manage billing. Any payment or account change is your separate decision; Quota Monitor does not auto-recharge.

Before expiration, create a replacement dedicated key, update the connection securely and verify a successful read. Then disable the old monitoring key only. Confirm existing applications are unaffected.

What Quota Monitor reads from Telnyx

  • credit_limit is a credit line, available_credit includes balance plus that line, and pending is an unsettled amount. They are separate details, never additions to the displayed balance. Missing details are unknown, not zero.
  • A workspace is a different organization context. Several keys and Quota Monitor projects may share one balance; do not sum duplicates. No billing-group or managed-account switching/aggregation is performed.
  • BYOK charges remain with the external provider. This connector does not measure gateway spend caps, free AI allowances, service-specific eligibility or invoice totals. Positive balance does not guarantee access; zero/negative values are retained.
  • Payments and billing can lag. ACH funds may remain pending before the portal balance updates. Refresh re-queries the service, not settlement. Compare the same account, currency and time.
  • REST/MCP telnyxBalance.balance, creditLimit, availableCredit and pending retain exact decimal strings. Missing/null balance, non-USD, malformed values or query failures keep the previous successful snapshot and timestamp.
  • The dashboard shows the latest successful snapshot. Manual refresh queries the provider again but cannot eliminate upstream billing delays. An old balance is not a new result after a failed query.

Telnyx FAQ and troubleshooting

401 or an invalid credential?
Check that this is an enabled, unexpired API v2 key from the intended workspace. Paste the complete bare value again through the secure form, without Bearer or whitespace. Do not send the key to support.
403 or Authorization failed (10010)?
Confirm the workspace and ask the existing owner to review balance access. Portal group permissions do not prove every v2 API supports delegated access. Do not grant yourself broader roles or substitute the owner's main key; use manual checking if access remains unavailable.
Why is Available credit larger than Balance?
available_credit can include credit_limit. These are not extra deposits. pending may also reflect unsettled payments. The main card deliberately uses data.balance, not an inferred sum.
Why do two projects show the same amount?
Projects organize your monitoring; they do not create Telnyx wallets. Multiple keys may share the same account. BYOK model providers and independent managed accounts must be checked separately; this integration does not aggregate them.
A payment or new usage has not appeared?
Verify the workspace and query time, then inspect pending payments in Manage billing. ACH settlement and billing are not made instantaneous by refreshing. Do not pay again solely because the monitor has not changed.
404, 422, 429, 503, null or unsupported currency?
Check the latest sync error. Wait before retrying rate limits or service failures; use the official status/support pages when needed. Missing, malformed or non-USD balances are rejected and the previous success remains dated. Do not change the API URL, assume zero or use a private endpoint.

Monitor Telnyx automatically

Checking a console by hand is easy to forget. Quota Monitor reads Telnyx through its official API for you.

  • Refreshes every 10 minutes by default, and you can refresh manually at any time.
  • Low balances, invalid keys, and sync failures appear at the top of your overview.
  • Group accounts by project, and ask about balances from AI assistants such as Claude through remote MCP.
