Guide updated
Implemented from official documentation; live-account verification is pending. Signed-in setup, Admin permissions and dashboard reconciliation have not been tested. Automated checks do not prove account success.
- Required credentials
- Venice Admin API Key
- Monitoring currency
- USD · separate DIEM and credit details
- What is monitored
- Account USD balance
- GET https://api.venice.ai/api/v1/billing/balance returns the authenticated account's balances. The main amount is balances.usd, already dollars (scope=account). DIEM, bundledCredits and earnedCredits are shown separately; projects and keys may share these funds.
Check Venice balances without sharing a key
- Sign in to the account paying for the API and open Settings → API.
- Read USD separately from DIEM, bundled and earned credits. Compare account balances, not a single key's consumption cap.
- If funding is needed, review the account and amount in Venice's own payment flow. Confirm it posts there before relying on it; no key needs to be shared with Quota Monitor.

Confirm the account and USD balance
Sign in to the Venice account that pays for your API calls and open Settings → API using the link below. Identify its USD balance separately from DIEM and plan-related credits.
Check: this is your API account, not another provider hosting the same model. You do not need to fund the account or run a model to set up monitoring.
Decide whether Admin-key access is acceptable
The billing endpoint requires Admin, although ordinary model applications normally use Inference Only. Admin also permits key management and paid inference; no balance-only scope is documented for this endpoint.
If your security policy forbids this, stop here and use the manual check below. Do not substitute a Cookie, wallet private key or your business production key; no policy JSON can remove the Admin powers.
Create a dedicated key with explicit type
In API settings, select Generate New API Key. Give Description a recognizable name such as Quota Monitor balance and set API Key Type to Admin. Review Expires at and the key's Epoch Consumption Limits.
Check the type before Generate. An expiry bounds its lifetime, but a consumption cap only limits spending and does not make the Admin key read-only. Leave existing application keys and permissions unchanged.
Save the one-time secret safely
Select Generate and copy the complete secret to a password manager before closing the result. The dashboard later shows identifying information, not the full secret.
Check: you saved the secret rather than its name or masked tail. Enter it without Bearer, quotes or whitespace. If lost, replace only this monitoring key; never reconstruct it or paste it into chat, URLs or screenshots.
Add Venice inside your Quota Monitor project
Open the target project, add a provider connection, choose a new connection and select Venice AI (USD). Give the connection a name identifying the upstream account and paste the Admin key into the masked credential field.
Save and wait for the first sync, or refresh once the cooldown ends. No account ID, project filter, custom endpoint or wallet address is required. A second project may link to the same account; it does not create another wallet.
Compare each bucket after the first sync
Compare the successful sync time and USD amount with the same Venice account. For example, balances.usd=25 means $25; DIEM=90.5 with diemEpochAllocation=100 remains a separate 90.5 / 100 display, never $115.5.
Check bundled and earned credits independently. USD=null is not zero; an absent field or failed response is a sync error. REST/MCP uses the same exact values in veniceBalance, with no extra usage deduction.
Use the official page when funds need attention
Open provider takes you to Venice API settings. Verify the signed-in account and its USD bucket before using Venice's own funding options; a person with authority should complete any purchase there.
Refresh after the provider posts it. A Key's USD or DIEM cap can still block inference even when the account has money. Do not raise a production limit merely to test this monitoring connection.
Rotate or stop the monitoring connection
For routine rotation, create a replacement dedicated Admin key, update the existing connection through the secure form and verify sync, then revoke the old monitoring key in Venice. Revoke immediately if exposure is suspected.
Removing a project association does not revoke the upstream key. Keep any shared connection needed by other projects, and separately delete or disable it when monitoring should stop. Never send raw responses or secrets to support.
What Quota Monitor reads from Venice AI
- USD thresholds apply only to the USD bucket. Do not add DIEM, bundled or earned credits to it, or add the same account again across projects. diemEpochAllocation is a replenishing allocation, not extra money.
- Explicit null means the provider did not make that balance available, not zero. Missing fields and failed requests preserve the previous successful snapshot and time. The query timestamp is not a settlement guarantee.
- canConsume is retained as an upstream billing signal in REST/MCP, not a promise of model access. Per-key limits, permissions and other restrictions still apply; no availability is inferred from USD alone.
- This connector only reads account billing. It does not read model content, generate, top up, change keys or connect a wallet. /api_keys/rate_limits is not used as a substitute: its schema describes key-level balances.
- The dashboard shows the latest successful snapshot. Manual refresh queries the provider again but cannot eliminate upstream billing delays. An old balance is not a new result after a failed query.
Venice AI FAQ and troubleshooting
- Why does an Inference Only key fail with 401?
- The account billing endpoint requires Admin; the official error is Admin API key required. The free rate-limit endpoint accepting either type does not prove billing access. Verify the type locally; do not share the key or try Cookies.
- What else can cause 401 or 403?
- For 401, check expiry, revocation and a complete copy without a Bearer prefix. For 403, have the account owner review any configured IP restrictions and the intended integration. Do not disable protections or broaden roles just to clear an error.
- Why is USD zero while models still work?
- DIEM or other credits may still cover eligible requests. USD warnings describe that bucket alone. Conversely, per-key consumption limits can block a model despite positive account USD; canConsume is not a universal access guarantee.
- Why is a balance missing or different from the key page?
- null means unavailable, not an assumed zero. The billing API reads account funds, while key caps are separate. Compare the same account and posting time; never sum DIEM with USD or replace billing data with rate-limit data.
- What should I do after 429 or a failed refresh?
- Wait for the cooldown and retry. Missing or malformed fields are rejected; the old successful amount keeps its original time. Report only a redacted error code and timestamp, not the key or full response.
- Is the tutorial already verified with a real account?
- Not yet. Official documentation and automated fixtures support this implementation, but you still need to test key creation, Admin access and every displayed amount in your own account. A successful deployment is not real-account verification.
